This Summer I became completely addicted to papaya. I’ve been buying it weekly at Trader…
My mom recently sent me an article from Yahoo!’s Shine titled (very dramatically) titled “5 Foods Americans Eat that Are Banned Around the World.” It basically has all the usual suspects such as Olean or Olestra –remember, that was the stuff in the Wow 0 fat gram potato chips that caused anal leakage–also featured was BHT, the preservative that’s been on the “do not consume list” for as long as I can remember, and of course those synthetic hormones in dairy products rBGH and rBST. There were also two chemicals that I wasn’t familiar with but can’t pronounce so you know they should be avoided. They were: Azodicarbonamide and Brominated Vegetable Oil. The first is a preservative that causes asthma and the second is a processed vegetable oil that can adversely affect your central nervous system or endocrine system.
Reading about these awful chemicals added to food reminded me of those old Breyer’s Ice Cream commercials where they had little kids read off the ingredients to show they were all natural and thus easy to pronounce. I’ve made it to a point to always remember that ad because reading food labels should not be more difficult than passing the GRE.
