5 Easy Tips to Fight Seasonal Allergies
After a long winter, spring is finally here. The blossoms are blooming, flowers are everywhere, the temperatures are getting warmer and it’s a great time to be outside…except for that one little challenge…seasonal allergies. Here are 5 tips to help you get through the season a little easier.
5 Easy Tips to Fight Seasonal Allergies
Tip 1: Eat fruits and vegetables
Eat colorful fruits and vegetables which are rich in antioxidants, omega 3, and high in quercetin, a flavonoid phytochemical that helps fight allergies due to its antihistamine properties as well as stimulates the immune system. Salmon and flax seeds are high in omega 3. Quercetin rich foods, such as apples, are also good for nasal congestion. So it’s true, an apple day, keeps the doctor away.
Tip 2: Stay hydrated!
Drinking lots of water will help prevent higher histamine production. (Your body produces more histamines when trying to fight off pollen and allergy irritants).
Tip 3: Change clothes when you get home from work, and be sure to wash your hair before bed to remove pollen.
This may sound a little extreme but in places like Atlanta where we get “pollen snow” (clouds of pollen floating through the air and falling from the tree tops like snow from clouds), it’s a great idea to take under consideration.
Tip 4: Use a HEPA filter and/or air purifier to keep your indoors free from allergens.
Tip 4: Use soothing eye compresses to remove allergens from your eyes and soothe itchiness.
Warm wash cloths or cold cucumbers (fresh from the fridge) work really well.
Tip 5: Avoid hair products during pollen season.
Many hair products can act as a pollen magnet so either avoid hair gel/hair spray (Yeah right, easier said than done. Am I right ladies?) Or wear a hat so more of your hair will be covered and protected from the pollen.
Remember–these tips are great all year round. Pin it so you can reference it no matter what the season!
I hope these tips help get you through this Spring’s Pollen season smoothly. If you have any favorite tips, I’d love to hear them. Good luck!
