Bust Winter Blues by Knowing the 3 R’s of Winter Wellness
Understanding the 3 R’s of Winter Wellness can help you combat stress, fatigue, and depression so you can beat the winter blues.
December-It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But many people feel just the opposite: stressed out, overwhelmed, tired, and depressed. How could that be?
Well, Chinese medicine teaches us that the winter season corresponds to the water element based on tranquility, flow, and the all important “three R’s” of: rest, (inward) reflection, and restoration.
Those who neglect or ignore the “Three R’s” often find themselves exhibiting the symptoms described above (stress, depression, tiredness, etc). If you can manage the Three R’s, you can have an enjoyable winter and set yourself up for a successful spring.
What are the 3 R’s to Help Combat the Winter Blues?
Number 1: Rest
As we see from nature, winter is a time for slowing down and even hibernating. While we don’t have time to hibernate, it’s still a good idea to remember to get 8 hours of sleep so your body can fully rest.
Take time for yourself.
Schedule a massage, dive into a good book, or catch up on your favorite show.
Come in from the cold, hustle bustle of the winter and holiday season. Rest, relax, and enjoy the winter days.
Number 2: (inward) Reflection
Keep a journal, try to become self-aware and self assured, practice self acceptance.
Tip: Remember this when creating your New Year’s resolutions.
Know yourself, know your body, know your habits.
You can still try to improve, but this will help you create more realistic goals and resolutions for yourself. If you’re more realistic, you’re more likely to keep them and that’s a recipe for success.

Number 3: Restoration
Participate in restful exercises based on fluid movements like yoga, pilates, and dance.
Be sure to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day–after all, winter is guided by the water element. So, now more than ever, it’s important to stay hydrated.
Finally, surround yourself with family and friends who can remind you how to laugh, smile, and love because this will help restore your soul and keep you warm all winter.
