My favorite new go-to party show-stopper is the DIY photo booth! They are super easy…
Are DIY Cough Drops Worth Your Time?
Do DIY Cough Drops really work? They’re healthy, all-natural and super easy to make with minimal ingredients. So I put them to the test. (Keep reading for my bonus vegan lemon fudge recipe–using the same ingredients.)
I had been noticing a lot of posts on Pinterest for easy, DIY cough drops, and when the big February cold starting making it’s way through my house, I decided to try them!
Would they be a Pinterest Win or Fail?
They sounded simple enough and I had all the ingredients in my pantry, so I went for it!
DIY Cough Drops
It’s basically just 4 ingredients. And if you’ve read any of my other cooking posts–you know how I’m a big fan of super simple recipes.
- ½ cup coconut oil
- ½ cup raw honey
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
I used the recipe found here at Proverbial Homemaker. I figured anyone who identifies herself as an actual homemaker must know what she’s talking about!
(I, myself, am sadly only a wannabe Martha Stewart.)
Blend all ingredients together. You can either use a blender or a hand mixer. Then transfer into a container and freeze. Be sure to wait at least 25 minutes for them to solidify before you try them.
Now, if you are a proper homemaker or super crafty, you can spoon the mixture into a baggie, cut the tip, and pipe into cute, happy shapes onto a wax paper-covered cookie sheet. This is what Tauna, my new Proverbial homemaker friend, did and you can read more about this on her website.
However–I–the Wanna-Be-Homemaker who’s head felt like it was about to explode with sinus pressure and coughing, did not have patience for such fabulous craftiness. So, I poured mine into a basic container and then cut it into squares when I was ready–which worked fine.
Now For the Moment of Truth!
How did they taste? Was it worth it?
I’ll be honest. I was super excited to try them. They’re packed with wonderfully healthy ingredients, but….I think this was kind of a FLOP.
TASTE: Refreshing and delicious…if I were trying to make vegan lemon fudge.
EFFICACY in Reducing my Cough or Sore Throat: Negligible
BOTTOM LINE: Save this recipe if you’d like to make Vegan Lemon Fudge. It has a great texture and taste. You just want to gobble them up. However, they melt in your mouth very quickly and taste more like a dessert than any kind of throat lozenge.
Side Note: I looked up actual Vegan Lemon Fudge recipes, and it’s actually the same exact recipe! So hey-you get a two for one–mediocre cough drop AND yummy lemon dessert!
- ½ cup coconut oil
- ½ cup raw honey
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- Blend all ingredients together. You can either use a blender or a hand mixer. Then transfer into a container and freeze. Be sure to wait at least 25 minutes for them to solidify before you try them.
ENJOY!
