Dora the Explorer – Teaching husbands kitchen navigation skills

As most households of young kids, we’re big fans of Dora the Explorer.  I love how she teaches problem solving skills, navigation, and sequencing.  I often find myself referring back to Dora in typical, daily situations when my sweet, angelic older daughter is being uncooperative or lazy–you know, those moments when you’re trying to get out of house and all of a sudden the shoes go missing—Missing? Or are they just buried in the shoe bin and someone doesn’t want to look? Dora and The Map to the rescue!

Begin the quick navigational refresher—Oh really, you can’t find your shoes?  Well, let’s ask The Map. Then I sing the silly song “I’m The Map, I’m the Map, I’m the Map, I’m the Maaap.”  And then I go through the possible ways to find the shoes. “First, you go through the scary forest of left out toys….then you climb the mountain of stuffed animals…and finally you reach the shoe bin.  Oh look, here they are! Yay! Problem solved, now let’s get to school!”

We always joke that husbands are like big kids.  So, last weekend when my husband mentioned he couldn’t find the milk, “We must be out,” he said, (even though I had just bought a new gallon jug a few days earlier)-  I thought–hmmm, I wonder if this is a case for Dora and the map.  So I simply replied “OH really, we’re out of milk? So fast?  Let me see…” And like a big silly, nerd I started singing The Map song, just as I would for little Cassidy.  And then I took him through a tour of the refrigerator.

(Yes, this is a giant bag of collard greens, but that’s how they come and they’re only like $2 a bunch!)

So, I guess the old adage is true–husbands just don’t like to ask for directions. But at least we can still help them by consulting The Map!  Thanks, Dora!
