One day last year, I happened to be at the grocery store with my dad. We were waiting in line at the check-out when he noticed the person behind us was wearing his fatigues. He turned around and thanked him for his service. They started talking and my dad said (in the way that old dads do) “You know I served in the military too. But it was decades ago. I’m sure it was way before you were born. It was over 50 years ago, now that I think about it. ” And the serviceman said with great sincerity, “Well, thank you sir, for serving our country. That means a lot to us.” My humble dad, embarrassed by this acknowledgment, struggled for words and shyly smiled. Luckily, it was our turn at the register, and he was off the hook.
As we left the store, I let out a giggle; it was kind of funny watching my dad get flustered over something so sweet. “That serviceman was really impressed by you, Dad,” I said. “I always forget that you were in the military because you never talk about it but it’s a big deal.” And he simply said “Well, it’s just what I did to give back.”
Let’s all raise a glass and toast all of the servicemen and women that risk their lives every day for our freedom. And this Memorial Day, let’s not forget…
