How to Pick a Wig-Selecting the Right Wig for You!
Technotini-PINK
Now that you’ve selected a good wig shop, you’re ready to pick your wig. It’s natural to think about how much you want to invest in your wig. You’re probably thinking “It’s just for 9 months-a year, do I really need to plunk down a lot of money. Do I really need to get a good wig?” And the answer is unequivocally YES!
Your hair is such an important part of who you are, whether you think about it that way or not. Once it’s gone, you will miss it terribly. As women, so much of our beauty and self-image is based on our hair and losing it is just one more reminder that you’re sick and not your normal self. I’ve learned that one key part of feeling good, even on the darkest days, is looking good. If you have an easy to manage, amazing hair piece (wig), then you will feel a whole lot better. Also, you have to remember that you won’t be paying for haircuts, hair products, hair colorings, etc for a year, so all that money you save almost pays for the wig. Good wigs go from $500-800 and insurance companies usually pay around $300 (sometimes more, sometimes less). One more thing to think about–how much did you pay for your wedding dress which you only wore for one day? Probably something similar or even more. The wig will be worn everyday for a year. I’m not in the wig sales business, I only say this to help you feel better in making your decision because it’s hard to plunk down a lot of money for something that you once had naturally and only need for a limited time.
1) Look for something easy to maintain (especially if you have kids).
2) Pick something that is similar to your natural hair style so it’s not shocking to your system. You’ll have enough changes going in your life, adjusting to a new hairstyle shouldn’t have to be one of them. That said, you may welcome the opportunity to do something drastically different. You can totally have fun with it.
I went with a wavy, beautifully highlighted, shoulder-length style that’s very easy to maintain with two toddlers. Before my chemo, I had long hair, but I’ve had shoulder- length in the past, so I knew it would look good. Also, I couldn’t find a curly hair wig that matched my style of curl so I opted for wavy wig which is how I do my hair when I’m at the salon. So I basically have that “fresh from the salon look” everyday. Fabulous!
3) Make sure the wig is comfortable
The wig should fit well and not require anything underneath. It should also be breathable and realistic. Nowadays you can get wigs that are made from a mesh-like base so it looks like your scalp under the hair, giving you a natural part no matter how you style your hair! Also, there are many synthetic wigs available now that look and feel like real hair, so you don’t need to pay thousands of dollars for a wig.
4) Be sure to take a friend or family member. Don’t go it alone!
Picking out a wig can be a very stressful and emotional experience. After all you’re looking for something to replace an essential part of you. However, you can still make it super fun. It’s almost like costume shopping!
I was extremely fortunate that my oldest and dearest friend from college just happened to be in town when I was looking for a wig, so she of course came with me. We both tried on wigs of varying styles and colors. In fact, she was the one that found the highlighted color of the style I chose.
Technotini Pairing: The Brandy Alexander
Inspired by my multifaceted chocolate brown wig, I’ve chosen this rich, chocolatey classic.
Recipe:
1 1/2 parts brandy
1 part dark creme de cacao
1 part half and half
1/4 tsp grated nutmeg
sprinkling of chocolate shavings
Combine the brandy, creme de cacao, and half & half in an ice cube filled shaker. Shake well, then strain into your glass. Garnish with the nutmeg and chocolate shavings.
