Did you know that the Georgia mountains are home to countless varieties of gem stones? …
How to Make a Magical Gem Stone Terrarium
Recently, my family has really gotten into gem mining so as you can imagine, we have lots of pretty gems accumulating around our house. So I decided to add them into a terrarium project that I was working on and the result… a magical gem stone terrarium!
How to Make a Magical Gem Stone Terrarium
Supplies:

- Open Air Terrarium
- Rocks for the bottom
- Flat marbles for the top
- Succulent-specific potting soil (available from your local garden center–I found mine at Home Depot).
- Very small succulents / cactus (Mine were probably a little too big)
- Gem stones
Note about supplies: You need rocks for the bottom for drainage and potting soil that has been mixed with perlite and sphagnum moss. I think it’s easier to buy the premixed bag but if you can’t find it you can make it your own. You can also use sand to layer on top, but we used pink marbles. (My daughter’s picked them out).
Step 1: Cover the bottom with the rocks.
TIP: If you have different colored rocks, be sure to put your favorites against the glass so you can see them.

Step 2: Add in the potting soil
Pat the succulent specific soil down so it’s even.
Step 3: Plant the succulents in the soil.
Tip: If you have garden gloves, wear them so you don’t get pricked by the plants’ spines. (I didn’t think of that until I got pricked.)
Sorry–I forgot to get a picture because I was distracted by all the prickles AND my kids were anxious to get started with the pretty pink marbles.
Now the fun part….
Step 4: Add a decorative layer like colored sand or flat marbles AND the gem stones!
Tip: Be sure to put the gem stones closer to the glass so you can see them more easily.

Step 6: Mist lightly once a week and enjoy!
