Hi everyone! Thanks for joining me for another Toasting Tuesdays where we toast all great…
Toasting Tuesdays -Toasting Technology and the Creative Spirit
Hi everyone!
Welcome to another Toasting Tuesdays.
Today, I’m toasting Technology for allowing us to continue to create beautiful musical collaborations even after an artist has long passed on.
I know this is nothing new. Natalie Cole was the first to create a digital duet back in 1991, masterfully performing with her father Nat King Cole who had passed in 1965. Since then, numerous performers (everyone from Susan Boyle to Tony Bennett ) have embraced digital technology to fulfill their dream of singing with some of the world’s greatest musical legends.
But it doesn’t stop with just musician created duets. It also comes from the fans themselves with user-generated music. Has anyone ever seen the mash-up of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Paul McCartney’s “Band on the Run?” I just discovered it from a tweet. When I first watched it, it made me really sad. It’s not surprising that if you take music from Paul McCartney and John Lennon’s solo careers and mash them together, you’ll get an amazing new song, and this mash-up only demonstrates how powerful the two musicians were together. You can see the brilliance of their combined talent, and it’s bittersweet because you know their joint performances are only a memory. But not necessarily–with the magic of digital technology, as this mash-up demonstrates, we can still continue to enjoy joint performances from John and Paul and other legendary artists as long as the creative spirit lives on in the fans.
Here’s to Technology, helping the creative spirit live on.
What are you toasting today?

I love that and I had a similar reaction, kind of an achy wistfulness. Those guys are a big part of the soundtrack of my childhood.

Yes, exactly-like an achy wistfulness–very well-said. i’m glad it wasn’t just me. 🙂 so bittersweet. Well, i guess it’s good we have the technology to keep the music going.

I’m currently without speakers on my computer, but I’ve seen other mashups and I’ve always been impressed with how they come out.

thanks for stopping by. Cheers, Shana
