These Vegan Mini Heart-shaped Brownies only look indulgent. They’re made with healthy plant-based ingredients like almond butter and flaxseed meal. The whole family will love them this Valentine’s Day!
It’s time for the January Pin Challenge! The purpose of the Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month’s challenge is all about Valentine’s Day Dessert Recipes.
I recently came across this delicious looking brownie recipe from Dessert for Two:
I thought “Ohh that would be fun to make for Valentine’s Day!” So, I tried it! And let me say, it’s as delicious as it looks!
I followed the recipe from Dessert for Two, except I substituted flaxseed meal for the coconut oil because I”m trying to cut back on fats in my baking this year.
Flaxseeds are high in nutrients and omega-3’s, and they have been known to help reduce cholesterol.
How to Substitute Flaxseed Meal for Oil
To substitute any kind of fat (oil, coconut oil, butter) with flaxseed meal, use the following conversion (source: Bobs Red Mill):
1 Tbsp fat = 3 Tbsp brown or golden flaxseed meal + 1 Tbsp Water (let sit for 5 minutes)
How to Make Vegan Mini Heart-shaped Brownies
Before you start, make sure you have a heart-shaped cookie cutter ready.
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup almond butter
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil or 3 tablespoons flaxseed meal +1 tablespoon water
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or GF brown rice flour)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- pinch of salt
- 3-ounce vegan chocolate bar, chopped (or vegan chocolate chips)
- Optional-1/4 of water
Instructions to Make the Heart-Shaped Vegan Brownies
Preheat your oven to 325 F (or 300 if you’re using the flaxseed substitute).
If you use the flaxseed meal substitute, lower the oven temperature by 25 degrees. There is less fat so they tend to burn quicker.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
If you’re making the flaxseed substitute, mix 3 tablespoons of flaxseed meal and water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine the: cocoa powder, almond butter, maple syrup and flaxseed meal mix (or coconut oil). Stir well, and then microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds.
- Remove from the microwave and stir to blend well.
- Add the flour, baking soda. salt, and chocolate chips. Mix well.
- If the batter is too thick (almost solid and not spreadable) then add 1/4 cup of water.
- Spread across the lined cookie sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes.

6. Check on the brownies after 20 minutes to make sure they don’t burn!
7. Let the brownies cool for about 5 minutes and then use the cookie cutters to make the heart shapes.
Enjoy!
