Celebrating TastyKake and Family Traditions
Sometimes you discover that a cupcake is more than just a cupcake. I realized TastyKakes remind me of my family and the American dream. And I also discovered that the new TastkyKake Minis are only 1.5 Weight Watcher Points and only contain 5 grams of sugar, so they won’t send your kids reeling! Now that’s feel good AND taste good food! (Disclosure: I was given a free box of TastyKake Minis to product test…and it was awesome!)
Earlier this Fall, I took a survey from Influenster, a product testing company, to see if I’d be a good fit to test a new baked goods product line. Now, if you read my blog, you know I never write about desserts-my food focus is more on healthy smoothies, yummy veggie-filled kid-friendly dinners, and other recipes packed with power foods. So, as I was filling out the survey I kept thinking “This is so silly, they’ll never pick me, I’m answering no to everything.” But I did say “Yes” when asked if my family and I eat cupcakes because Ummm Who Doesn’t???
The next thing I knew, I received an email saying “Congratulations! You’ve been selected to test the new line of TastyKake Minis!”
WHAT?!!! TastyKake Minis? As in mini bite sized TastyKake yumminess?
Yes! That’s exactly what they wanted me to test!
I then proceeded to do a little…ok, it was big.…a big crazy ridiculously joyful happy dance. My husband thought I was crazy. “Do those cupcakes come with some sort of golden Willy Wonka-style ticket? What’s the big deal?”
“Because it’s TastyKake!” I replied (Ok, I shouted). Then I realized, it represented way more than just some tasty little cupcakes. It represented the American Dream and Family…at least to me.
Growing up, my mom didn’t allow very many sweets in the house. (This is same woman that once tried to convert us all to eating carob instead of chocolate, until my dad put his food down! But that’s another story for another time…) Anyways…she always let us eat TastyKakes. She’d send them with love in our lunch boxes and serve them for dessert after dinner. We would sit around the kitchen table, enjoying our little cakes and listen to stories of how she enjoyed them when she was growing up. My mom and my grandparents came to America after the Holocaust with literally nothing. With hard work, my grandparents were able to open a little corner grocery store where they sold deli meat, milk, eggs, bread, penny candy, Coca-Cola, and…TastyKakes. My mom would always have a pack of TastyKake Butterscotch Krimpets after school while she helped out in the store and made sure her little brother didn’t eat an entire box of (any flavor) TastyKakes (which apparently, he was prone to do).
Fast forward to today—TastyKake still has their delicious classic flavors, but now they also have a great new mini-sized line which are perfect for kids and calorie-conscious consumers and well, everyone.
The TastyKake Minis come in a variety of flavors:
I was sent the Mini Swirly Cupcakes which are exactly the same as the regular sized TastyKake Swirly Cupcakes, just adorably mini. They’re chocolate cupcakes, covered with chocolate icing and filled with a yummy whipped cream center.
My favorite part about the new Mini line is that each mini cupcake is only 1 1/2 Weight Watcher points! (They come wrapped three cupcakes in a pack, so if you eat the whole pack, it’s still only 5 points!).
Let me say that again–Each Mini cupcake is ONLY 1 1/2 Weight Watcher Points!
So indulge because it’s not indulgent!
Besides being super small and adorable, the TastyKake Minis are also kid-friendly from a sugar standpoint.
Each TastyKake Mini contains only 5 grams of sugar. It’s a great low-sugar dessert for kids!
I don’t like to give my kids (who are still small, ages 3 and 5) anything more than 10 grams of sugar after dinner or else we’re guaranteed to have bedtime issues.
So share with your little ones, it’s not high in sugar!
I certainly did. And I was extremely happy to start a new family tradition of sharing TastyKake minis after dinner with my daughters like my mom did with my sister and I.
