How to Make a Festive Santa Hat Calming Jar

This Festive Santa Hat Calming Jar is great for kids and adults alike!  It’s super easy to make and perfect to help keep you calm during the stress of the holiday season. It also makes a great gift for friends and family—because let’s face it, everyone could use a fun way to relax this year!  

Welcome back to year 6 of our Festive Christmas Event where we team up with a bunch of talented blogging friends to bring you a plethora of creative ways to celebrate your holiday season.

With all the craziness and stress of the pandemic, my family and I have gotten super into calming jars. We’ve been making them with all kinds of colors and now that the holidays are here, I decided to make some festive versions for friends and family.  

How to make a Festive Santa Hat Calming Jar

How do Calming Jars Work

At first I was skeptical, but they really do work! Calming jars allow your brain to focus on something other than your stresses. And in that brief stress “intermission” so to speak, your body is able to re-center itself and get out of the fight or flight mode. I It helps you relax your body and regain control over your emotions.

What kind of glitter should I use in my calming jar?

My biggest tip for creating Calming Jars is to think of the different sized glitters as paint. The FINE (or smaller) glitter will fill up your background while the larger sized glitter will serve as an accent color. Additionally, using white fine glitter will add extra sparkle to a dark color like red. So in this case, I’ve chosen Fine red glitter to fill up my bottle and I chose larger sized blue snowflakes to serve as accent pieces.

 

What kind of jar should I use for my calming jar?

I like to use the plastic tube-like jars from Michaels. They’re only $1.99 and can be found at the front of the store. The advantage to using a plastic jar is that it won’t shatter if you drop it. You could also use a mason jar, if you prefer.

Supplies

• One Jar Warm water Wood skewer (to stir the glue)
• Fine Glitter, I chose red and white
• Super Glue/Krazy glue (to seal the jar)
• 5 oz bottle of clear glue
• A little bit of white paint for the lid.
• Optional: larger glitter, maybe a fun shape like snowflakes

Directions: 

1. Warm up some water, you’ll want enough to fill the jar about 75%. Pour the warm water into the jar.
2. Next, pour an entire bottle (5 oz) of clear glue or glitter glue. The glue needs to be clear; not opaque like traditional glue. This allows you to see all the glitter. You can also use glitter glue if you find a bottle that compliments your Calming Jar theme.
3. Stir the glue and water until the glue fully dissolves.
4. Next, it’s time to add the glitter! Start with about a tablespoon. (You can always add more). There is no right or wrong way to design your glitter jar.
5. Next, choose a large glitter as an accent. Put the lid back on the bottle and give it a good shake.
6. Play with it a few times and see how you feel. Do the colors make you feel calmer?
7. Do you need to add any extra glitter? If so, open it back up, make any necessary adjustments.
8. When you feel good about your jar, adhere some super glue to the inside of the lid and reattach the lid.
9. Now it will stay sealed and you won’t have to worry about any liquid spilling out.
10. Voila!

You’re done and have a special holiday present for friend, family member, neighbor, or maybe even your child’s teacher.
