In reality, we are all Claire Huxtable

Phylicia Rashad is perhaps America’s most beloved TV mom, having played the role of Clair Huxtable for 8 years on The Cosby Show. Little girls and moms alike looked to her as a shining example of how a strong, bright woman could work in a high powered career and still always (and effortlessly) make time for her family-no matter what.
While appearing on the Steve Harvey show this week, Rashad was asked about the new breed of TV moms-the “reality TV” moms. After a dramatic, serious pause she replied “The theater has a saying…
“Theater is life, Film is art, and Television is furniture. The reality moms belong to the furniture.”
Wise words from a wise woman, however–like all guilty pleasures, I think a splash of ridiculous reality (TV) is fine in moderation. Phylicia Rashad also said that life is fleeting and we must make each moment count. So yes, I could sit down with an important intelligent book from Oprah’s Book Club and challenge my mind. But where’s the instant gratification in that? Sometimes, it’s just a lot easier to turn on the TV after a long day of diaper changes, toddler tantrums, and other basic mom worries such as: will your little one get into the “right” nursery school? Is your kid getting enough nutrients, Are they learning enough? Are they active enough? Are they playing enough? Are they imagining enough? …and everything else we we could possibly obsess over…
…but I digress. As I was saying, sometimes it’s just a lot easier to turn on some reality TV and let your worries float away. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch an awesome gem such as a “Toddler and Tiara” mom sticking glue in her daughter’s eye (while applying false eyelashes ). You’ll then remember that you’re a great mom and in reality your kids are gonna be OK. In reality, we’re a lot more like Clair Huxtable than we give ourselves credit for.
