How to Make Super Easy Egg-Free Unicorn and Dragon Cookies!
These adorable egg-free Unicorn and Dragon cookies are super easy to make and allergy-friendly. The dough is made from only 4 ingredients and yields two kinds of cookies-Unicorn cookies and Dragon’s Breath-which are filled with fiery red hots! Try these for your next kids birthday party or school party treat!
This past Fall, my daughter’s teacher sent home a note requesting fun treats for their special “book tasting” event. They were celebrating the end of their Fairytales reading unit and needed cute snacks.
Fairytales? Whaat? I can make something for that! And I quickly volunteered to make unicorn and dragon cookies.
I had been wanting to make a dragon-inspired cookie using red hots for a while and thought this would be the perfect opportunity!
Knowing that one of my daughter’s classmates has an egg allergy, I decided to try and make an eggless sugar cookie. I found this super easy sugar cookie recipe from Maureen at Orgasmic Chef and used it as the base.
With only 4 ingredients, I knew I could handle it!
Ok—NOW—that gorgeous picture does NOT tell the whole story. When I went to make these fantastical cookies for the “book tasting” party, here’s how they actually turned out.
Pretty pitiful looking—luckily, they did taste DELICIOUS and the kids really enjoyed them.
Still—I KNEW I HAD TO REDEEM MYSELF.
So then when it was time to make cookies for my daughter’s birthday I decided to try these cookies again and this time I spent some extra time thinking about how to make them look more like actual unicorns.
I decided to go the “Sleepy Eye” route, and it’s super easy!
Tips to make the egg-free Unicorn and Dragon Cookies even easier
The wonderful thing about Sleepy Eye design is that ANYONE can do it. All you do is draw a wide arc.
Think of it as a wide hill with eyelashes on the side. Easy right?
Yes! You can do it!
A little bit about this two-cookie recipe
This recipe is basically TWO RECIPES in one.
You’ll start by making the egg-free cookie dough.
Then you’ll divide it in half.
One batch for the unicorns and one batch for the dragons. If you decide to just make all one flavor then skip this step.
The trick to the unicorn cookies lies in the decorating, whereas the secret sauce to the dragons is all in the candy red hots!
Those are what give it the fiery breath! So the more red hots in the batter, the more fire in the cookie!
Now, let’s get baking!

Ingredients:
- 3½ cups flour
- 2 cups salted butter
- 1½ cups sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Bugles chips for the Unicorn horns
- Red Hots for the dragon’s breath
- Sprayable cupcake icing
- Black Writing Icing
- Sprinkles (green sanding sugar for the Dragon Cookies, flower or star shaped sprinkles for the Unicorn Cookies)
- Optional: extra pink or purple sprinkles for the unicorns and edible gold dust shimmer for the unicorns (I got mine at Michaels)
Instructions for the batter:
Preheat Oven to 350 degrees
Step 1: Cream the butter and sugar.
Basically, this is a fancy way to say “mix for a while.”
But seriously, this step is important so make sure you mix on medium speed until the butter and sugar are fluffy.
Step 2: Slowly add in the flour and mix until well incorporated.
Step 3: Add in the vanilla and mix again.
Step 4: Divide the dough in half. Take half out and set aside for the Dragon’s Breath cookies
Unicorn Cookie Batter Specific Steps:
- Take the first half of divided dough. Scoop out into small balls and place them onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle each ball with a spoonful of sugar. (The sugar will create a nonstick surface so you can easily flatten the dough.)
- Take the bottom of a glass and mash the ball down to ¼-½ inch thick.
- To make them perfectly round, use the mouth of the glass as a cookie cutter. Or if you have round cookie cutters, you could use those too.
- Add a Bugle to the top as the unicorn horn
6. Bake for 7-12 minutes. Check the stove at 7 or 8 minute mark. I used the top rack of my oven and the cookies were perfect at 8 minutes.
7. Let the cookies cool, then decorate them.
How to Decorate a Sleepy Eye Unicorn Cookie
Start by adding the flower and mane embellishments.
To do this, add some icing underneath and around the Unicorn Horn (aka Bugle chip) then adorn with fun sprinkles.
We used these cute star shapes.
We also used this fun gold dust shimmer to enhance the unicorn horn.
(I don’t know that it added that much to the aesthetic. You could probably skip it. But having said that-my daughter really appreciated it.)
Next, create the Sleepy Eye
To make the perfect Sleepy Eye, all you have to do is make a big swooping hill. I like to add a little flare, so mine have a little extra swoosh at the end where I add the lashes.
Dragon Cookie Specific Steps:
Step 1: Take the dough that was set aside and put back in the mixer.
Step 2: Add about half a bottle of red hot cake decorator candy and add green food coloring until you reach the desired color.
Step 3: Mix on low until well incorporated.
Step 4: Then scoop on the cookie sheet and sprinkle with green sanding sugar sprinkles. Follow the baking directions from the Unicorn cookies.
Step 5: Once cookies are done, no further decorating is required.
Step 6: Let the cookies cool, then Enjoy!
