How to Make Super Easy Bookmark Sugar Cookies
These super easy Bookmark Sugar Cookies are great for any occasion but especially great for summer reading rewards, Back to School, and school parties. They can easily be adjusted for allergies. Your kids will love them!
This summer, I’m trying to help my younger daughter increase her reading stamina and develop a life long love of reading.
So, I’ve been working on different activities this week to help get her excited.
In my article about Tear Free Ways to Build Reading Stamina, I talk about having rewards to increased reading.
My daughter loves to bake so I decided as her reading reward this week, we could bake Reading-Inspired cookies…in the shape of Bookmarks!
How to Make Super Easy Bookmark Sugar Cookies
For this recipe, I used the pre-made cookie dough. I thought by using the pre-made squares, it would help keep the rectangle shape (instead of using a cookie cutter), but the cookies still spread.
If you’d like an easy homemade recipe for sugar cookies, check out my recipe for Egg-free Unicorn and Dragon cookies! It’s super easy and great for folks with egg allergies.
Ingredients:
SCROLL DOWN FOR A PRINTABLE RECIPE CARD.
- 1 pack of pre-made sugar cookie dough
- 1 bag of peel apart licorice
- Writing icing
- Tools: pizza cutter or knife and skewer or toothpick
- Optional: rectangular cookie cutter
Steps
1)Take 3 squares of the pre-made cookie dough and push them together to form a rectangle.
2) Use a skewer or toothpick to make a hole at the top (this is where we will put the licorice ribbon at the end.)
3) Bake according to the pre-made dough’s instructions.
4) Set the timer for 2 minutes less than what the directions say. At this point, pull the cookies out of the oven and reshape the hole. It will fill in during the cooking process.
5) Put the cookies back in for a couple more minutes.
6) When they are done, trim the edges with a pizza cutter or knife. (If you used a cookie cutter and don’t have cookie-spread then skip this step.)
7) Let the cookies cool for 10 minutes
8) Once cookies are completely cool, it’s time to attach the licorice ribbon.
Peel apart the licorice and feed a few pieces through the hole.
Press together as shown in this picture below.
9) Next, take the writing icing and write something fun. I’m not that artistic, so I just wrote
R-E-A-D
My daughter had a really good time decorating her cookie.
I love these pictures of her concentrating and then looking so proud at her work. It’s these little moments that make those big kitchen messes worth it!
(And if these cookies inspire her to read more, then it’s even more worth it!)
Enjoy!
Mmmm. soo good!
