Strawberry Watermelon Agua Fresca-Cocktail and Mocktail
This summer, my daughter discovered a fabulous strawberry drink at our favorite breakfast place. Every time we’d go to brunch, the bright beautiful signs of this new strawberry drink would taunt her. They’d call out her name “Cassidy, come and try us. You know we taste yummy. Try us, Cassidy, try us.” They were like strawberry sirens singing out to her every –time-we’d go.
“Please Mommy,“ she’d plead. “Can’t I try a strawberry drink? Please! Please! Please!”
And then I’d look at the price.
“$5! Umm no!”
And then I looked at the menu description:
strawberries, lemon, mint, and sweetener.
“We can make that ourselves,” I’d declared. And so we did…
Strawberry Watermelon Agua Fresca-Cocktail and Mocktail
As we set out to make the perfect strawberry drink, I realized what we were actually making was an Agua Fresca.
Agua frescas are THE perfect summer drink to keep you hydrated. Simply blend fruit and water together. You’re keeping all of the nutrients and fiber intact—basically creating a very light, water-based, thirst-quenching smoothie.
Before we get to the recipe, I’d like to share some lessons learned…
Lesson 1: Do Not Add Lemon
I researched several different ways to make agua fresca. Most of them contain lemon juice, however, after some trial and error, I realized that adding the fresh lemon juice made it waaay too sour. If you add lemon, you’ll then have to add LOTS of extra sweetener (agave or sugar) which totally defeats the purpose of making something nutritious.

If it’s really hot out and you want it cold, add about 1 cup of ice. This amount is small enough to ensure that the drink does not get slush yet large enough to create a colder drink.
Or substitute frozen strawberries for fresh strawberries. This will also help make the drink colder.
