How to Make an Exploding Witches Brew Cauldron
We’re combining STEM, Disney inspired Zombies, and Halloween Witches to make a citrus (grapefruit) volcano that looks like an exploding Witches Brew Cauldron! This is a great Halloween party or even Disney Zombie party idea.
How to make an Exploding Witches Brew Cauldron…Disney Zombie-Style!
Don’t forget to Pin for later!
This is the first in a 4 part series inspired by the Disney Channel movie “Zombies.”
(Upcoming posts include Edible Zombie Slime, Exploding Zombie soda bottles, and Zombie Punch.)
After last year’s unicorn-inspired breast cancer awareness themed Halloween, my girls begged me to do something scarier this year. So, we put our heads together and decided to focus on Disney’s Zombies.
The Spellbinding Inspiration
Recently, I was looking for a new STEM focused craft to do with my girls over our Fall break, and I came across the idea of Lemon Volcanoes. Simply put, you take a lemon, add red food coloring, mix baking soda with it and voila….it bubbles over, turning into a mini volcano.
Well, since this is October…my mind automatically turned to spookiness and I thought…
You Know…if we used GREEN food coloring instead of red (for volcano), it would look a lot like a Witches Brew Cauldron!!!
But…we couldn’t stop there….
In a traditional Lemon Volcano, you’d add extra lemon juice to keep it going, but since we’re making this Disney Zombie style, we’ll be adding lemon-lime soda to really KICK IT UP A NOTCH!
Because remember, like in the Disney movie, lemon-lime soda can turn people into Zombies!!!
The Science Behind the Bubbling Witches Brew
When an acid and a base combine, it reacts and starts to bubble and fix. If you have a lot of it, it will overflow like a volcano.
What you’ll need to make your very own Exploding Witches Brew Cauldron
(I’ve included all the steps in a printable format at the end of this post).
- Large lemon or grapefruit
- Optional: Black Paint
- Knife
- Craft stick, spoon, or grapefruit spoon
- Food coloring (we used green)
- 2 tablespoon Baking soda (you can use more if you’d like it more fizzy)
- Lemon-lime soda
How Make an Exploding Witches Brew Cauldron
Take your citrus fruit. We used a grapefruit. Slice off the top portion and save for later.
Next, paint the outside of the grapefruit black so it resembles a cauldron.
Then, using a knife or grapefruit spoon, loosen up the citrus sections. Feel free to really get in there and mix it up. This helps it get nice and juicey.
Next, add your food coloring, about 5 drops.
Now for the super fun part….add the baking soda! Pour it on top and then mix it in.
It will slowly start to bubble and fizz as it reacts with the acidic citrus juice.
If you’d like it to fizz more, squeeze in more juice from the top portion that you previously removed and then add in more baking soda.
Let’s go Zombie style
Remember in the Disney Channel Movie “Zombies,” it was the lemon-lime soda that turned half the town into zombies.
So for a an extra fun, extra fizzy step grab that lemon-lime soda and slowly pour it onto the grapefruit.
But be careful—you could turn into….Zombies!!!!
