One of my favorite holidays is the Fourth of July. Maybe it’s because I grew up right outside DC where the great monuments to democracy stand as daily reminders of our freedom, or maybe it’s because I’m second generation American, the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors-I understand how immensely lucky we are to have our freedoms safeguarded by the checks and balances of our democracy, or maybe it’s because I just like fireworks-ok I really, really like fireworks-especially timed to music.
I’ve celebrated Independence Day all over this great country–under the purple mountains majesty, around the amber waves of grain, in boats, by monuments, in quiet family camping trips, in riotously fun parties with friends, but one of the most memorable occasions was one that truly honored the Declaration of Independence. I had been at a friend’s barbecue all afternoon and we were about to head over to see the fireworks, when the host asked for everyone’s attention. We all gathered around and he reminded us why we were all gathered together. It wasn’t really for the great burgers, or the beer, or the friendly laughter and banter among friends-those were all just very awesome bonuses–we were really gathered to celebrate our freedom and independence and the fact that over 200 years earlier, our founding fathers had the courage to stand up for our inalienable rights. (Of course, true freedoms wouldn’t be included until the amendments to the Constitution but the foundation and the beginning of those freedoms were enumerated in the Declaration.) Historians say that Thomas Jefferson had originally intended to have the Declaration performed publicly throughout the colonies, (but that never really happened), but in that spirit my friend stood and performed a reading of the Declaration. I had never seen this done at a party before and was very moved and thought “What a great tradition.” So, with that in mind, I present to you “A Superbowl Reading of the Declaration of Independence.” (That’s right–football and history, what could be better than that! haha)
And if there’s one thing that makes me happy…oooh…There’s gonna be Fireworks!”
