Grandma’s Classic Chocolate Meringue Pie
This Classic Chocolate Meringue Pie recipe comes from my husband’s grandmother. It’s a family favorite and with one bite, I’m sure you’ll agree. The rich and creamy chocolatey filling just melts in your mouth. Read all my tips and tricks to make this recipe a little easier.

One of my favorite things about the holiday season is celebrating family traditions.
And one of the yummiest ways to do that is through old family recipes.
This year I decided to incorporate Grandma Sutton’s ye ole Classic Chocolate Meringue Pie into our holiday festivities.
Grandma Sutton passed away long ago, at the ripe old age of 99, and I was fortunate enough to spend some wonderful times in the kitchen with her. She made everything look so easy (like this decadent chocolate pie) because she did everything with patience, love, and farm fresh ingredients.
Nest Fresh Eggs fresh from the farm
Grandma Sutton grew up on her family farm and exemplified farmhouse cooking, where everything was made from scratch and gathered fresh from outside.
The result: fresh dishes that just tasted better.
And that’s why I was excited to make this recipe with eggs from NestFresh.
They’re humane/ free-range, non-GMO, sustainable eggs produced at family farms across the country.
I thought…what a sweet tribute to Grandma Sutton—using eggs that came from family-owned farms—like the one she grew up on—not to mention they just taste better.
How to make Grandma Sutton’s Classic Chocolate Meringue Pie
I will say—helping Grandma Sutton in the kitchen making this delicious pie of chocolate decadence was a lot different from leading the charge myself.
If you’ve read any of my other recipes, you’ll know I like recipes that are Quick and Easy!
Warning—this is not necessarily either of those two.
However, I’m here to help! In this recipe, I’ll be providing lots of tips to guide you through the process so it’s as painless as possible. (The hardest part was the meringue.)

Classic Chocolate Pie Filling
In a large sauce pan, stir together dry ingredients (the sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt). Next, continue to stir adding in the milk and egg yolks.
Cook on medium heat until stirring constantly.
Add in the butter and vanilla.
Bring to a low boil and cook until everything is dissolved, well combined and nice and thick.
Grab your pie shell and pour the mixture into the shell. Set aside.
Should we just stop for a second and enjoy the glory of that pure chocolate decadence?
I also need to tell you, it smells soooo good when you pour it into the pie shell.
Sooo rich and chocolatey.
You could actually stop at this point and you’d have a game-changing chocolate experience.
BUT if you would like to go all the way and make the meringue, keep reading.
How to Make the Meringue
This is where you need to use some patience. I had never made meringue before…well except for that one time I helped Grandma Sutton make pie and that was a long time ago…
First, you’ll make a cornstarch/sugar mixture.
To do this, combine the cornstarch, sugar, and cold water in a sauce pan. Cook on medium until sugar is dissolved and everything is well combined.
Set the mixture aside and let it cool.
While the mixture is cooling, begin to beat the egg whites on medium speed. When they start to get foamy, add the vanilla.
Next, add the cornstarch/sugar mixture and beat on high on for several minutes.
(I’m not going to lie, it will seem like forever but doesn’t everything seem that way when decadent chocolate is at stake??)
The egg whites will soon start to form their traditional white peaks.
DO NOT STOP MIXING until they LOOK LIKE THIS:
Be careful not to over-mix. Once the meringue mixture if firm and white peaks are forming, then it’s ready to add to the pie.
Scoop it out on top of the pie filling.
Seal the edges of the pie crust over the meringue. This helps keep the air out.
Cover with festive sprinkles.
Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes, until the meringue is light brown. Watch it closely so it doesn’t burn.
Enjoy!
Now, grab your spoons because it’s time to dig in!!!
Are you ready??
